As I wander through the charming streets of Calabria, I can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the old historical buildings that dot the landscape. These faded beauties are not relics so much as testimonies: the rich history and culture of this region written directly into stone and plaster.

One villa stopped me. Its facade had crumbled unevenly, ochre plaster giving way to bare wall in patches, the garden gone wild with vines and overgrowth, a stark contrast to whatever grandeur it once held. And yet, even in its dilapidated state, there was a beauty in the decay, a sense of history and character that no freshly built structure could ever borrow or imitate.

I couldn't help but wonder about the people who once called this villa home, the laughter and tears that must have echoed through its halls. There was something bittersweet in standing before it, knowing that a structure once so magnificent was now slipping, slowly, into the past.

But learning more about Italy's historical preservation laws brought an unexpected comfort. The design and construction of these old buildings are likely to remain exactly as they are for years, maybe decades, to come. It may look like disrepair to some. To me, standing there, it looked like a kind of poetry: these structures could stand as silent witnesses to passing time.
